Environmental Work of Contracted Hotels

On March 18, 2004, seven five-star hotels as the first group to provide accommodation to the accredited staff including the Olympic Families, sponsors and media, signed the Olympic Lodging Agreement with BOCOG. In order to fully realize the idea of "Green Olympics", BOCOG also drew up an environmental guideline with stricter standards for those contracted hotels.

In 2004, Environmental Activities Department (EAD) and Games Service Department (GSD) organized a series of environmental activities. All the actions made the contracted hotels being model of other hotels in Beijing.

1. Training for the Guideline

In order to help the managers of the hotels not only understand the Guideline, but also take action during their work, BOCOG gave a detailed introduction of the Guideline.

Furthermore, for those hotels renovated to save energy, some experts on energy and energy conservation of walls were invited to introduce advanced energy saving techniques to their engineers.

2. Proposing Energy Conservation

During the National Energy Saving Week, BOCOG called on its contracted hotels to respond to the proposal put forward by seven ministries and commissions of the State government including the National Development and Reform Commission, which suggested that air-conditions should be set up one degree higher during summer and one degree lower during winter without affecting the human body's comfort. All the contracted hotels (23 by then) responded actively and made a demonstration to others.

On the first heating day of Beijing, BOCOG presented the energy saving communication cards to its contracted hotels (80 by then) designed by the Global Village of Beijing (GVB, an NGO of China). The cards have been put into the rooms to communicate energy saving knowledge to the guests directly.

3. Green Illumination Project

Cooperating with the Green Illumination Project proposed by the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, BOCOG encouraged its contracted hotels to use energy saving light instead of incandescent lamp. By incomplete figure, more than 20,000 highly efficient lighting products as well as 10 electricity saving devices were purchased by the contracted hotels.
