Taiwan Province - Major Scenic Spots 主要景点All Mountains Scenic Area 阿里山风景区 Located in the northeast of Jiayi County, Ali Mountains are the general term for 18 mountains such-as Mount Dawuluan, Mount Jian, Mount Zhu, and Mount Ta. The mountains range 1,000 meters to 2,500 meters above sea level. It is an ideal summer resort. Its main peak is Data Mountain towering 2,663 meters above sea level. It is the famous scenery area. The temperature here varies greatly between the foot of the mountains to the mountaintop appearing tropical, subtropical, temperate, and frigid zones. It is reputed as “Forest Treasure-house.” The mountain is high and steep with beautiful scenery. In the Ali Mountain area there are five wonders such as a 72-kilometers-long climbing up the mountain railway, forest, sea of clouds, sunrise, and sunset glow. Also there are following sceneries such as Sister Pool姐妹潭, Cherry Garden 樱花园3,000-odd-year-old Mysterious Tree神木, Benevolent Cloud Temple慈云庙, Tree Soul Pagoda树灵塔, and Three-Generation Wood三代木. Mysterious Tree 神木 Situated in eastern side of the Mysterious Tree Terminal, the red Chinese juniper is 53 meters high; the upper girth of the tree is 23 meters in perimeter. Legend relates that the tree was planted When Duke Zhou acted as a regent, it was called “Duke Zhou Juniper,” and reputed as the mysterious tree in Ali Mountain. When tourists visit the Ali Mountains without seeing the tree with his or her own eyes, it is not a worthwhile trip for tourists to the mountains. On the left side of the tree is a pavilion. In the south-eastern side of the tree there is a “Guangwu Juniper光武桧,” which was planted during the reign of Emperor Han Guangwu (Li Xiu, 6 BC-AD 57, reigned AD 25-57), more than 1,900 years old. Beside there is a “giant sleepless night mysterious tree眠目大神木.” It is estimated that the tree has a history of over 4,100 years old and acclaimed as the “King of the Trees” in Taiwan台湾树王. Sun and Moon Pool 日月潭 Guanghua Island is regarded as the boundary, the northern part of the pool resembles sun, and while in the southern part of it looks like a moon, hence its name. The Sun and Moon Pool is the largest natural lake in the province. The elevation of the lake surface is 770 meters, and the lake’s perimeter is 36 kilometers, the water area is more than 9 square kilometers, and average depth of the water is over 30 meters. People often compare the charm of the pool with that of West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. It is a famous scenic spot, which lures tourists all the year round. Apart from the picturesque scenery of the pool, there are many other tourist attractions such as Wenwu Temple, Benevolent Grantitude Pagoda, Xuan Zang Temple, Teachers’ Guild, Guanghua Island, Dehua Society, and Shandi Cultural Village as well. The Palace Museum in Taiwan 台湾故宫博物院 Built in 1962, and formerly known as the Palace Museum, encompassing 10,000 square meters, it opened to the public in 965 in memory of 100th anniversary of Dr Sun Yat-sen’s birthday and renamed Zhongshan (Dr Sun Yat-sen) Museum. Set on the slope of the hill, the entire building with palace-like structure consists of four floors, offices and library are located on the first floor, The second to fourth floor are exhibition halls. Confucius Statue and a magnificent Memorial Archway are erected in front of the museum. Before 1949, the 240,000-national treasure relics were transported from the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Shenyang Palace Museum, and the Mountain Summer Resort in Chengde, and other collections from al over the world totals 640,000, including bronze ware, jade ware, porcelains, lacquer ware, silk fabrics, books and paintings, rubbings from stone inscriptions (usually as models for calligraphy), carvings, classics, imperial (or royal) seals, uniforms, and antiques, etc. Each time only 20,000 pieces of cultural relics are on show, and they are rotated every three months. In the back courtyard there is tunnel connecting with the third floor. The tunnel is 180 meters long, 3.6 meters wide and 6 meters high, collecting treasures.
