Shanghai 上 海 - The Nanpu and Yangpu Bridges 南浦和杨浦大桥

The Nanpu Bridge and the Yangpu Bridge link Pudong to the rest of the Shanghai. These were the first bridges to span the Huangpu River and were catalysts for Pudong’s extraordinary development. They were financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) loans totaling US $ 155 million. The Nanpu and Yangpu bridges are running at near capacity—Nanpu averages 120,000 vehicles a day while sister bridge Yangpu handles 100,000 vehicles crossing a day. When the showcase bridges were completed in 1991 and 1993 respectively, they were a source of pride for Shanghai and the whole country. Nanpu Bridge’s center span of 423 meters was by far China’s longest cable-stayed bridge—until it was surpassed by Yangpu Bridge with a world record center span of 602 meters. The world-class bridges represented a significant technological triumph for Shanghai. Nanpu was designed by the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute, using the Alexander Fraser Bridge in Vancouver as a model. ADB provided technical assistance by bringing an international group of world-class engineers to review it. Chinese engineers learned quickly and designed Yangpu on their own. Largely as a result of improved transport links with the rest of Shanghai—since the ADB-financed bridges, a third bridge, three tunnels (two are one-way) and a subway line have been added. Lupu Bridge is the first longest arch bridge in the world卢浦大桥――世界第一拱桥.The bridge was completed and put into operation in May 2003 to relieve the traffic crossing Huangpu River. With 2.2 billion yuan (US $ 266 million) in investment, the 3,900-meter-long bridge has broken the world’s bridge-building record with a 550-meter-long main arch (of which the main bridge totals 750 meters and its width being 28.75 meters), 40 meters longer than the New Virginia Bridge in the United States. The main arch of Lupu Bridge is made up of 27 sections. The bridge is made of more than 35,000 tons of steel.

Architecture shapes the appearance of a nation’s city and its international image 建筑塑造一个国家城市的外观及其国际形象。
