Jiangsu Province 江 苏 省 简 介 - Zhenjiang 镇江市 - Other Scenic Spots 其它景点Beigu Hill 北固山 Rising from the Yangtze the steep cliff face of the 48-meter high and 100 meter-long Beigu Hill was a natural fortification and was chosen by the King of Wu, Sun Quan (182-252, reigned 229-252), as the site of his capital, Tiewangcheng, in the third century. The exquisite Iron Pagoda was built in the period 825 to 826 in the Tang Dynasty and has an extraordinary history of survival. Constructed in the 9th century on the site of an earlier pagoda, it had seven tiers. It was destroyed at the end of the Tang Dynasty by a big fire. It was rebuilt in the Song Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, the upper tiers were again destroyed, this time by lightning and strong wind again. Only the foundation of the pagoda and the first and second tiers were survived. Several Ming tiers were discovered nearby during restoration in 1961 and replaced in position above the only two remaining original Tang tiers. More than 2,000 Tang-dynasty relics were also found at that time. Jiaoshan 焦山 Towering 150 meters, Jiaoshan is named after the hermit Jiao Guang焦光who led his secluded life here in the late period of Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-220). Hearing of his reputation as a scholar, the emperor three times offered him official posts and was three times turned down. Legend has it that a cave on the hillside used to be Jiao Guang’s abode. Perched on the peak of the hill is a small building providing the early morning visitor with an enchanting view of the sunrise on the Yangtze River. By the side of the building are the remains of a gun emplacement, which was used by the people of Zhenjiang during the Opium War (1840-1842) against the British invaders. The treasure of rare calligraphy at Jiaoshan is celebrated. Among the more than 260 tablets and engravings stored in a studio here is a memorial tablet with the most beautiful calligraphy on the burial of a crane. It is here that a palace for Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) of the Qing Dynasty was built, whose calligraphy is considered superb, preserves his own handwritten works. The steep cliffs of the western slope of the hill are covered with names and poems engraved by tourists of past centuries, many of them being prominent literati.
