Founded in 1902, Nanjing University celebrated its 100th birthday on May 20, 2002. The University dates back to 1902 when Nanjing Normal School was founded. The schllo was then renamed Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University and National Fourth Zhongshan University. From 1915 to 1928, a number of China’s famous professors and scholars such as Wu Mi, Xiong Qinglai, Tao Xingzhi, Li Shutong taught in the University. Liang Qichao (1873-1929), Dewey, Russel and Tiger also gave lectures in the university. In the period 1928 to 1949, Li Siguang (1889-1971), Luo Jialun, Gu Yuxiu and Wu Youxun were presidents of the University. By 1947, the University had seven schools including 41 departments, 23 research departments and 5,000 staff, the largest among its Chinese counterparts. In 1950, the University was formally renamed Nanjing University. In the following 50-odd years, the University developed into one of the top prestigious institutions of higher education in China. At present, the University has an optimal academic structure, embracing almost all the fundamental social and natural science disciplines. The University consists of 15 schools, with 38 departments offering courses ranging from humanities, engineering, life sciences, social sciences and management. The University also boasts strong and high quality teaching and research staff. Statistics show that from 1992 to 1998, a great number of thesis written by the faculty of the University were documented by the Science Citation Index, an international scientific-research documentation organ, ranking first among China’s over 800 universities. In the last decade, Nanjing University has won 800 awards at State and provincial levels. Thanks to their outstanding achievements in their respective fields, a record high of 23 professors from the University have been honoured as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

To improve the quality of teaching, the University has offered various teaching prizes and scholarships to encourage innovation in teaching methods. It has also set aside special funds for the publication of textbooks and academic works. Nowadays, the University has about 27,000 students, including 5,000 masters and phD candidates. Graduates from the University are among the first choices of employers at job fairs.

In International academic circles, eight Nanjing University graduates have won the US President Award and other awards. Many scientific discoveries have been named after the University’s postgraduates and their advisers. In the International English Speech Contests held in London, Nanjing University won the competition twice. In the 1994 Nationwide College Student Debate Contest and the 1995 International College Student Debate Contest, Nanjing University defeated strong rivals and won the championship. These credits can also be partly attributed to the sound teaching and research facilities.

The University has a library with a collection of 3.7 million volumes. It also has 84 laboratories of various types, 53 cross-disciplinary research centers and other large-scale scientific research bases such as computer centers, modern analysis centers, network information centers and educational technology centers. The university has also been very active in international academic exchanges.

Since 1979, the University has formed close ties with over 100 universities in 20 countries and regions. It has been engages in various kinds of programmes to train teachers, conduct joint research projects and hold academic seminars and symposiums. To facilitate exchanges and co-operation, the University has set up the Overseas Education Institute, the Johns Hopking University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies and the Sino-German Law Research Center. Every year, the University receives around 1,500 overseas students and scholars to study in these centers. Aiming to be an international, comprehensive and research-oriented institution, the University is pressing on with full speed.
