An Introduction to Jiangsu Province 江 苏 省 简 介

Abbreviation: Su 苏
Capital: Nanjing
Area: More than 100,000 square kilometers
Population: 71.27 million
Location: In the coast of east China and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River

Jiangsu Province (a land flowing with milk and honey鱼米之乡) makes the most of its productive locale in the Yangtze River Delta. The province is the birthplace of many of China’s important national industries.

Six sectors—petrochemicals, electronics, machinery, textiles, building materials and food processing—are the province’s pillar industries. To develop these industries, many large and modern enterprises have been put into operation.

Township enterprises are expanding rapidly as well. Their output value is two thirds of the province’s total.

Since the reforms and opening-up policies took effect in the late 1970s, Jiangsu’s economy developed rapidly and sustained itself. In over the past 20 years, the annual growth rate was 12.8 per cent.

A modern transportation network has gradually sprowled across the province. The Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway (dubbed the “busiest golden road,” helps shorten the time taken to travel between Shanghai and Nanjing. The investment in the expressway totaled some 10 billion yuan or US $ 1.2 billion), as well as the Nanjing-Liangyungang and Nanjing-Nantong grade 1 highways, currently open to traffic, have made economic and social development easier.

Two other projects, the Nanjing Lukou International Airport and South Jiangsu section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, have been completed. A third transportation magnet, the Jiangyin Yangtze River Road Bridge opened to traffic.

Construction on two other key projects, the Nanjing Yangtze River No 2 Bridge and the North Jiangsu Expressway, has been accelerated.
