Jiangsu Province 江 苏 省 简 介 - The Comb Lane 篦萁巷

The Comb Lane is located in the western part of the city, along the northern bank of the Old Canal. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, there used to be an imperial post station here. Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty visited this place during his south inspection tour and he noticed the famous palace combs sold in the shops here. Therefore, the emperor renamed this place the Comb Lane. The story of Jia Baoyu, hero of the novel, bidding his last farewell with his father Jia Zheng at the Biling Post Station, which involved in the illustrious classic novel, titled “A Dream of Red Mansions” by a Qing Dynasty writer Cao Xueqin (?-1763) took place here. It is now a commercial district full of ancient hues.

The Comb Factory is still in operation since its days of manufacturing the combs for the Imperial Family. Richly decorated and functional combs for combing and pinning the hair are available here as a unique Chinese handicraft. These lightweight and hand-painted combs make unique purchases and gifts, and you may note their usefulness in the traditional and stylized hairstyles of the Beijing Opera and Chinese paintings.

Changzhou Wooden and Bamboo Combs 常州梳篦

Changzhou Wooden and Bamboo Combs have a history of more than 1,500 years, dating back to the Jin Dynasty. They are traditional Chinese handicraft articles, known as “Palace Combs” and were one of the eight famous hair decorations in the ancient times in China. The combs have been awarded medals for eleven times at various exhibitions both at home and abroad in nearly one hundred of years: a silver medal at Panama International Peace Exhibition in 1915, a gold medal at the US Philadelphia Fair in 1926 and a Quality Product Certificate by China National Light Industry Ministry in 1979.

Made of choice material, the combs undergo carving, cutting, painting and scorching, which make them singularly beautiful and unique in style. They are ideal gifts and are suitable for both daily use and decorations.
