KunmingKunming, capital of Yunnan Province, is a famous historic and cultural city listed by China. With a radiant and enchanting spring scene all the year round, Kunming is known as the "City of Perpetual Spring". In addition, Kunming is rich in both natural and historical tourist resources. Major tourist attractions include the site of '99 International Horticultural Exposition, Yun nan Nationalities Villages, the Stone Forest, the Jiuxiang Caves, the Xishan (West Mountain) Forest Park, the Grand View Mansion, the Black Dragon Pool, the Bamboo Temple. the Jindian (Golden Hall) Scenic Resort, the Anning Hot Springs, the Yuantong Temple, and the Zhenghe Park. Dianchi Lake Dianchi Lake lies in the south of Kunming and covers an area of 300 square kilommers. Known as a" pearl on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau", tile lake, 1,885 meters above sea level, is vast and charming. Around the lake are the Grand View Tower, Baiyukou (White Fish Mouth ). Zhenghe Park, ancient tombs at the Stone Village hill and other scenic spots. The Nationalities Villages The Nationalities Villages are situated by Dianchi Lake, 6 kilometers south of Kunming and cover a bout 133.3 hectares. Yurman is an epitome of the family of the Chinese nation. There are 56 nationalities in China and 52 of them live in Yunnan. Among them 26 each has a population of more than 5,000. In order to exhibit the customs and conventions of these 26 nationalities, it is planned to build 26 natural villages, giving prominence to the architectures of various nationalities. Eight villages have been now completed and they were officially opened on February 18, 1992. The group sculpture at the entrance is called "white elephants greeting guests". When night falls, real elephants in the villages salute to guest. Stone Forest The Stone Forest is situated inside the state-class scenic area known as the "home of Ashma" within the territory of Lunan, Yi Autonomous County southeast of Kunming. It is 86 kilometers away from Kunming City, barely a two-hour drive. The scenic area is made of seven scenic spots. They are Greater Stone Forest, Lesser Stone Forest, Naigu Stone Forest, Da Die Shui, Long Lake,Moon Lake, Zhiyun Cave and Strange Wind Cave, The county's stone forests cover a total area of 400 square kilometers. The giant stalagmite clusters are like vast forests. Some constitute independent scenic spots; some are linked together, measuring several hectares or even dozens of hectares. The most typical is what is known as the Greater Stone Forest. It is noted as the "No. 1 wonder of the world" for columns of grotesque stone shooting up into the sky, layer upon layer and in thousands of postures out of the creation of nature.
