A Passage to China (走近中国) - Islam Islam probably first reached China in the mid-seventh century. Islam
came to China mainly from Central Asia. The Silk Road helped not only
commerce but also the spreading of Islam. Arab merchants or Muslim merchants
who traveled the Silk Road through Central Asia to and from China converted
many peoples, including the Han people and the Uygur people. The Yuan
Dynasty witnessed the zenith of prosperity of Islam. Now China has more
than 30,000 mosques. Today it is believed that there are 4 million Chinese Muslims. There is one autonomous region, Ningxia Huizu, which is designated for Islamic people. It is true that from 1966 to 1976, a period of what is called the “Cultural Revolution”, Christian churches, Buddhist temples and Islamic mosques were closed and some damaged. After 1977, however, the situation has returned to normal, worship services among religions reopened, and the damaged religious buildings have been repaired.
